Joey Chestnut successfully defended his world championship at Siegel’s Bagelmania competition held in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 31. In what proved to be one of the closest finishes ever witnessed at such an event, Chestnut narrowly edged out his fiercest challenger by just an eighth of a bagel!
Chestnut, who holds more Major League Eating records than anyone alive – including Hot dogs, Twinkies and hard-boiled eggs – managed to consume 16 7/8 bagels in eight minutes during an eight-minute competition timeframe; Patrick Bertoletti came close, devouring 16 3/4 bags. Chestnut’s victory is sure to remain fresh in Bertoletti’s mind for some time!
Competition Details
Chestnut won an astounding performance at this contest by eating hundreds of plain bagels paired with creamy cheese as fast and without remorse, earning himself $5,000 of the total $10,000 prize money and the championship title belt.
Top Performers
Completing the top five were some well-known faces from prior events:
3. Geoffrey Esper made 16 1/8 bagels; 4. James Webb took 16 bagels home; and Nick Wehry managed 13 7/8.
All participants exceeded the total bagels produced the previous year; Esper still holds onto her world-record of 17 3/4 bagels set during the inaugural competition held by 2023.
