The Vegas Golden Knights announced on Sunday they have fired head coach Bruce Cassidy after their recent string of unfavorable results (1-6-0). John Tortorella will take his place with eight games left before regular season is over.
Kelly McCrimmon made this announcement following his team’s sixth loss in seven games that dropped them to third in the Pacific Division. McCrimmon stressed the decision was taken so as to assist his squad in returning to its high level of play expected of their franchise.
McCrimmon acknowledged Cassidy’s contributions as head coach of the Knights – including leading them to win their inaugural Stanley Cup championship in 2023 and reaching every playoff round since he took charge – but decided a change was necessary at such an important stage of their season. Cassidy still had one year remaining of his five-year deal upon being fired.
John Tortorella Takes the Helm
John Tortorella, 67 years old and with extensive NHL coaching experience from stints with New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning, Columbus Blue Jackets and most recently Philadelphia Flyers (2022-2025). Tortorella will lead his new club for nine years before retiring as head coach of Las Vegas Golden Knights in 2025.
Tortorella earned one Stanley Cup championship with Tampa Bay in 2004, matching Cassidy. Tortorella is known for his no-nonsense leadership approach and requires players at every position on his roster to put forth full effort regardless of status or salary.
Tortorella recently served as assistant coach to the U.S. men’s national team during its gold medal winning performance at Milan Cortina Olympics 2025-26 season.
McCrimmon expressed confidence in Tortorella’s abilities as a strong leader for this pivotal period in the season, noting his experience and championship pedigree as key assets moving forward for his squad.
The Golden Knights face an uphill struggle as they trail Edmonton Oilers by three points for second place in the Pacific Division. But their coaching change might help secure them a playoff berth and bring back championship-caliber playmaking ability.
