Vegas Sports Update: Vancouver Whitecaps Sale, Raiders Training Progress, and Aces Title Pursuit

news

Major League Soccer club the Vancouver Whitecaps now has another potential buyer competing against those looking to purchase and relocate it from Nevada.

Whitecaps Sale Intensifies

Arthur Griffiths reportedly heads a group interested in purchasing the Whitecaps soccer team from Vancouver since late 2024. Griffiths previously helped bring in NBA Grizzlies team to town back in 1995. Details regarding his plans remain scarce for this soccer franchise acquisition attempt.

On the field, the Whitecaps have excelled this season – currently leading Major League Soccer’s Western Conference with 10 wins, 3 losses and 3 draws – but behind-the-scenes their organization is encountering significant hurdles. Discussions have revealed how their lease agreement at BC Place–where their home matches take place–limits revenue generation on game days while restricting scheduling flexibility; it should be noted that BC Place, owned by BC province itself isn’t built specifically to host soccer.

Las Vegas MLS Relocation Bid

The Vancouver Whitecaps rank near the bottom in Major League Soccer for valuation and an investor group led by Grant Gustavson recently submitted a formal offer to Major League Soccer (MLS) to buy out and move them to Las Vegas.

Las Vegas has emerged as a center for professional sports league expansion and relocations. NFL’s Raiders recently relocated from Oakland and are entering their sixth season here while NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights (league’s 31st franchise), first played during 2017-18 and won Stanley Cup 2023, reaching final again last spring.

Major League Sports Growth in Las Vegas

MLB’s Oakland Athletics plan to relocate from Oakland, Texas, by 2028 with plans for a $2 billion domed stadium being constructed there. Meanwhile, in 2018 after moving from San Antonio, Las Vegas Aces arrived. Also starting this coming season Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) plans on debuting its inaugural Las Vegas team at T-Mobile Arena.

Expansion of NBA franchises into Las Vegas remains a top priority of several ownership groups and they are actively exploring possibilities. A 50-acre site close to the Strip has been designated for construction of an arena that would accommodate an eventual NBA team.

Raiders Offensive Line Development

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak recently provided updates regarding progress made so far during training camp, specifically regarding development of its offensive line with special note to center Tyler Linderbaum being identified as key member. Linderbaum was signed as a free agent earlier in camp as one who fits well within their outside zone running scheme.

Veteran Kolton Miller anchors left tackle, with Jackson Powers-Johnson, Caleb Rogers and DJ Glaze taking their places alongside veteran Kolton Miller on the offensive line. Kubiak expressed optimism but acknowledged there remains work ahead.

Zack Kuntz, an ex-New York Jet, joined to strengthen their roster.

Kubiak Comments on Offensive Chemistry

Kubiak made Kirk Cousins the starting quarterback to kickoff training camp and reporters inquired into his relationship with two-time Pro Bowl tight end Brock Bowers of the Raiders, while showing enthusiasm towards other offensive players like wide receiver Tre Tucker, Jalen Nailor and Mike Washington Jr and Ashton Jeanty as well. Additionally, Kubiak stressed the significance of getting more reps under everyone’s belt to prepare the team for next season.

Las Vegas Aces Begin Critical Road Stretch

As trade deadline approaches, one of the WNBA’s premier teams — Las Vegas Aces with 20-9 record — are embarking on an important road trip as they monitor moves by rival teams that could bolster or diminish their bid for championship.

After scoring an impressive 104-99 victory against New York Liberty and narrowly falling short against Chicago Sky, the Aces trail Minnesota Lynx by 3.5 games in Western Conference standings.
